The movements in japanese zen
archery are aesthetic and beautiful. The hips
movements and the slow positioning of the body,
the waiting postures and methods of walking
produce considerable strength and flexibility.
Because the practice of Kyudo involves little in
the way of hard physical activity, the spirit is
extremely important. It is said that shooting
with technique improves the shooting, but
shooting with spirit improves the man. Kyudo
places greater emphasis on the beauty of form
with accuracy as an expression of correct
shooting rather than "hitting for hitting's
sake". The mastery of the breathing patterns
gives the movements a magical and dynamic pace
that is not found in everyday life. This
combination of the warrior, the dancer and the
monk can teach the archer patience,
concentration, relaxed focus, improved decision
making, harmonization with others, and a
realistic view of their potential for self-
development.
